The History Class of '06 *Departmental

Graduation in May
brought us to the end of the most successful year ever for the History
Department. Beginning with the relocation of departmental offices to
Founders Hall in late summer 2005, the department's profile has risen on
several fronts. In December 2005, a unique and happy instance of
departmental progress took place when Professors Lawson Bowling,
Mohamed Mbodj and Irene Whelan were all promoted to the rank of full
professor by the college. The department was also awarded a
Fulbright Visiting Scholar for the next academic year, the first at the
college since 1988. In addition, a new hire in Latin American History
has
been approved by the administration. Finally, enrollment figures
for majors and minors and graduating seniors exceeded all records
set in previous years. Some History Grads of the Class of 2006, above & below, the Sunday before their graduation.
***************************************** During the academic
year, a memorial plaque honoring Professor James Bonar
was placed under
the tree that had already been planted in his honor alongside the campus
drive to the south of the Music Building. Jim's career
teaching History at Manhattanville spanned four decades, lasting from
1966-99, whereupon Prof. Colin Morris filled his position. Jim
taught colonial and 19th century American history and was the founder of
the American Studies program here. He was a graduate of Drew
University and earned the Ph.D. in History at Johns Hopkins.
Reqiescat in Pace.
