COURSE DESCRIPTION - This course, open to all students, emphasizes the biological structures and functions of the brain and nervous system in health and disease.   Topics include neuroanatomy, cellular organization and membrane biology and neuroimaging such as CAT scan and MRI.  This course counts toward major credit in Biology.

PREREQUISITES - None.

OBJECTIVE:  to understand the structural and functional organization of the nervous system in health and disease, and to gain awareness of the research and technological advances in the field of neuroscience.

REQUIRED TEXT:  NEUROSCIENCE: EXPLORING THE BRAIN, 3 ed., Bear, M. F., et al. Williams and Wilkins, Baltimore, MA, 2006.

READINGS:  Chapters from the assigned text MUST be read before the appropriate lectures. Outlines for each chapter will be given to aid in the study of the material covered. Reading of additional handouts, which supplement the text and lectures, is strongly recommended.   These handouts will include clinical topics and current directions in neuroscience and research.

STUDENT EVALUATIONS:

75% = 3 SCHEDULED EXAMINATION** EXAM I - The Nervous System in Health EXAM II - The Pathology of the Nervous System + 15% EXAM I EXAM III - Current Topics in Neuroscience + 10% EXAM I + 10% EXAM II

20% = 1) WRITTEN ARTICLE ON THE TOPIC OF YOUR CHOICE

(title and bibliography must be submitted in writing no later than 3/19/07)

5% = CLASS PARTICIPATION/QUESTIONS (includes attendance)
