PROGRAM DESCRIPTION - The following three-course sequence must be completed by each Biology major before graduation.

1) BIO 3099: Research Seminar*

a) to introduce the student to scientific research problems and to aid in enhancing the student’s critical problem-solving skills

b) should be taken by students in the spring semester of their junior year (or in the third from the last semester for accelerated programs). Credits: 2

2) BIO 3499: Senior Research*

a) during this independent laboratory course, the students will establish their experimental design, standardize their protocols, and continue their literature search.

b) should be taken by students in the fall semester of their senior year (or in the second from the last semester for accelerated programs). Credits: 3

3) BIO 3998: Senior Evaluation

a) a continuation of the senior research project culminating in an oral presentation to the Biology department and a written journal article.

b) should be taken by students in the spring semester of their senior year (or in the last semester for accelerated programs). Credits: 2

All Biology majors in the research program are required to attend the senior presentations.

* If a student is out of sequence for Research Seminar, Biology Research must be completed in the fall semester.  This course takes the place of Research Seminar or Senior Research.

4) *BIO 4499: Biology Research

a) this repeatable independent laboratory course is a continuation of the senior research project. It is primarily designed for those students who are off sequence in the research program, for those students who need to repeat one of the courses in the sequence, or those students who begin their project in the Sophomore year and want to continue through their senior year.    The content of the course depends on the level of research.

b) should be taken by students in the fall semester of their senior year (or in the second to last semester for accelerated programs). Credits: 3
