FANNIE AND JOHN HERTZ FELLOWSHIP
Purpose:
To
support the graduate education of students interested in pursuing a Ph.D. (at
specific universities) in
a field pertaining to Applied Physical Sciences.
Fields of Study:
Applied
Physical Sciences includes, but is not limited to: Aeronautics/Astronautics;
Applied Mathematics; Applied Physics; Applied Science; Astronomy; Biotechnology;
Chemical Engineering; Chemistry; Civil Engineering; Computer Science; Earth
Sciences; Electrical Engineering; Industrial Engineering; Materials Science;
Mechanical Engineering; Nuclear Engineering; Operations Research; Physics;
Quantitative Biology; Statistics
Eligibility:
As stated by the Hertz
Foundation, in order to qualify, a candidate must demonstrate:
1)
Citizen or permanent resident of the U.S.
2)
exceptional
intelligence and creativity
3)
excellent
technical education
4)
orientation
and commitment to the applications of the physical sciences
5)
extraordinary accomplishments in technical or
related professional studies
6)
features of temperament and character conductive to high attainment as a
technical professional
7)
appropriate moral and ethical values
8)
leverage (i.e. what impact the award will likely have on the kind, quality,
and/or personal creativity of the selected student)
9)
a willingness to make skills available to the US in times of national
emergency, as stated in the Moral
Commitment
section of the Foundation's website
10)
attend one of the schools on the "Tenable
Schools" list
The Hertz Foundation supports only the pursuit of a Ph.D.; therefore, it does
not give awards to students pursuing an MD, LLD, or MBA. The Foundation
does, however, support the Ph.D. portion of a joint MD/Ph.D.
program.
Award:
| Selected applicants will have a choice between the
following two Fellowship options:

- $28,000/9-month
personal stipend
- Full
tuition equivalent
- Renewable
up to 5 years

| 2)
Five-Year Coordinated - Option 2 |
|
Hertz Period -
Two Years:
|
- $33,000/9-month
personal stipend
- Full
tuition equivalent
Other Fellowship Period - Up to Three Years:
- $3,000/year
supplemental stipend from Hertz
- Requires
Awardee to accept a 3-year Fellowship from another source
