JAMES MADISON JUNIOR FELLOWSHIP 

Purpose:   

To support students who intend to pursue a M.A., M.A.T. or M.Ed. in specific areas and are committed to teaching American History, American Government, and/or Social Studies for grades 7-12.

Fields of Study:

American History; Political Science; Government and Politics; Government; American Constitutional History; Political Theory

Eligibility: 

To qualify, a candidate must:

1)  a U.S. citizen 

2)  be a graduating Senior by Aug. 31 of the competition year

3)  plan to begin graduate work on a full-time basis

4)  pursue and complete a master's degree in one of the following:

  • Master of Arts (M.A.) in American history or in political science (also referred to as "government and politics" or as "government")

  • Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) concentrating in either American Constitutional history (in a history department) or American government, political institutions, and political theory (in a political science department)

  • Master of Education (M.Ed.) or the Master of Arts or Master of Science Education with a concentration in American history or American government, political institutions, and political theory.

5)   have a proposed graduate plan of study that contains substantial constitutional coursework; at least 12 semester credits. Six of these credits will be earned at Georgetown University at the Foundation's Summer Institute on the Constitution.

Award:  

  • Maximum $24,000, prorated over period of study and not to exceed $12,000 for one academic year.  Normally, Fellows receive less than the maximum amounts.
  • Payments are made only for the actual costs of tuition, required fees, books, and room and board, and are made only for the minimum number of credits required for the award of the degree for which a Fellow is registered.
