As
faculty,
student leaders and staff prepare for Orientation, the excitement in
the air is palpable.
After
receiving 3,231 applications for the freshman class – more
applications than ever before – the class of 2009 is by all
measures a banner class.
Freshmen
will arrive from 32 states (7 more than last year) and 31 countries
(10 more than last year), including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Ghana,
Indonesia, Kenya, Nepal, Pakistan, Turkey, Zimbabwe and many others.
More
than 70 incoming students received Duchesne Center scholarships for
their community service, interfaith and social justice involvement
in high school.
There
also are 25% more male students in the freshman class.
Nearly
100 received the prestigious Board of Trustees scholarship for
academic and extracurricular excellence.
Ninety percent
of those who applied preferred to live
on campus; this fall there will be 1,200
residential students.
Finally,
the
new Manhattanville Advancement Program (which replaces HEOP) has
attracted 16 students. By state parameters, HEOP prevented the
college from admitting students who had financial difficulties but
were succeeding academically. Like HEOP, MAP offers
Manhattanville grants as well as federal and state aid.
Students also receive academic, personal, and career counseling and
will participate in a variety of activities, such as the
pre-freshman program that eases their transition into college.
Welcome
Class of 2009!
